About The Experience
This lovely apartment is one of three Tuscany accommodations on this estate within walking distance of the charming town of Orentano, and only 15 km away from Lucca. The beautiful shared grounds in a wooded hiking area, a tennis court, and a picturesque swimming pool. There are many convenient day trips from this location, including Lucca, Florence, the coastal beaches, and Pisa.
Location Description
This apartment is located in the countryside, within walking distance of the small Tuscan village of Orentano, perhaps known best for its traditional shows, organized throughout the year. The most significant of these occurs in February: the children's carnival, a kind of festival/parade with floats designed to delight and inspire the imaginations of little ones. In July there is a pizza and beer festival featuring traditional Tuscan dishes, and in August comes the cake festival, celebrated with the creation and display of one elaborate, gargantuan cake! You can always find a restaurant, a pizzeria, and various small shops in town. The surrounding area also produces two famous DOC wines: Montecarlo and Chianti. The nearby medieval hamlet of Altopascio is also well worth a visit, as it has a long and interesting history dating back to the 12th century. Altopascio also offers a Thursday market, a bakery, supermarket, and an internet point. But if you have a taste for more urban delights, this Tuscany apartment also has easy access to the Autostrada, so you'll have no problem taking day trips to various Tuscan highlights, including Lucca, Pisa, and Florence.

    Customer Reviews

    Overall:
Very comfortable and convenient property. It is one unit of 3 units in a building; there was one other group in residence but we felt that we were alone. A nice setting in wooded area of rolling hills. No "big" views, primarily forest and trees.
    Enjoyed Most:
Large space and multiple restrooms, with reliable hot water. Well stocked kitchen supplies.
    Unpleasant Surprises:
The lighting in the living space was a bit dim, and there are no particularly expansive views from the property.
    Surrounding Area:
The property felt nicely remote and quiet, though close to a large town and the autostrada. A great location to explore all of Northern Toscana.
    Nearby Events or Locales:
Orentano was the nearest town, about a 20 min walk to the main street. Altopasco is the big town, 5 mins by car, with multiple supermarkets and other townie amenities.
    Directions:
The directions were good, but the "sign" on the main road to the dirt road turn off is very small and hard to see. Expect to blow by it and turn around. A better landmark is a 3-foot diameter convex mirror on a pole to help drivers look around a blind corner on the right side of the road going toward Orentano. Look for the mirror with an orange frame and then look for the little sign below the mirror, on the pole. GPS coordinates 43.784029N, 10.672771E
    Check In Out:
Very easy check in and out; the owners are very friendly and helpful.

    Overall:
Relaxing, peaceful, perfect! Giovanna's welcome was the perfect start to our vacation. We were greeted with a full fridge, two bottles of wine, bread, wine, cheese.... I could go on. In fact, having arrived late on Saturday we didn't need to leave the complex until Monday morning. Giovanna even delivered fresh bread on Sunday morning. I had planned a full itinerary of sightseeing but most days we didn't leave the apartment until 2:00pm, just in time for expresso and brioche!
    Enjoyed Most:
The peace and quiet. The grounds. Perfect for children. I barely saw my 9-year old who spent most of the day in the chilly pool, playing tennis or exploring the grounds. The welcome was wonderful too.
    Unpleasant Surprises:
The beds are very hard. Also, we welcomed the pool being open so early in the season but it was very cold. A heater or solar panels would be a welcome addition.
    Surrounding Area:
Our favourite town was Lucca. In fact we liked it so much we decided to forego seeing Florence to make a return visit. If you have children, hiring bikes and riding around the city walls is a must. Pisa was fun but it's very expensive to go up the tower - worth it though! Volterra is worth seeing too.
    Nearby Events or Locales:
There seems to be a disagreement as to whether Orentano is walking distance. The distance is not really a problem as it only takes 10 - 15 minutes to get into the center. However, it's along a road with no sidewalks, so it could be hazardous during the day and a definite no-no at night, especially with children.
    Tips or Restaurants:
La Benito in Orentano was very good and AMAZING value for money. The local bakery in Altopascio was excellent for fresh bread every morning. Very few people speak any English so a good phrase book is a must. If you visit Lucca avoid at all costs the coffee shop they recommend in all the guide books, Caffe di Simo - rude people, overpriced, the worst coffee in Italy and average pastries.

    Overall:
My experience was tremendous. Spent 6 days with friends who all enjoyed the house and the facilities. Will definitely recommend to others and go next year or the year after myself, again.
    Enjoyed Most:
    Location.
    Unpleasant Surprises:
The walls of the house were thin and was able to hear next door very easily.
    Surrounding Area:
Beautiful garden, great pool and the tennis court was in great condition.
    Nearby Events or Locales:
Yes, Orentano was the closest and was about 10-15min walking distance depending on pace.
    Tips or Restaurants:
Yes, absolutely bring mosquito repellent sprays. Tons of mosquitoes and many bites.
    Check In Out:
Proprietors do not speak very good English so was a bit hard to understand each other.
