About The Experience

If you have dreamed about living in a charming walled French town for a week or two, with history, restaurants, museums, shops and a vibrant local scene at your doorstep, then this is the apartment for you! You can people-watch from the large windows overlooking the Place de l'Horloge, roam the town, or take day trips throughout Provence. So much to see: the outdoor market in Uzes on Saturday, the Pont du Gard, the antique markets in Isle sure la Sorgue on Sunday, Mount Ventoux, the vineyards, the Festival d'Avignon in July, Fountaine de Vaucluse, and on and on. There are two reserved car parking spots reserved for you in the garage beneath the building, something that is quite hard to find in Avignon.

Location Description

The Avignon city apartment is in the very center of the medieval walled town of Avignon, with large picture windows facing onto the main square of Place de l'Horloge. The windows overlook the two-story carousel and the Opera House. The Palais des Papes is 200 meters away. The Pont d'Avignon is a 2-minute walk. The indoor farmer's market, Les Halles, is a 3-minute walk, through a pedestrian-only shopping area of hundreds of stores. There are restaurants and museums everywhere. There are old stone buildings and narrow alleys next to Roman ruins, medieval walls, baroque palaces and modern conveniences.

Exterior Description

The apartment is in a condominium building constructed 40 years ago. The building is light colored stone, 5-6 stories, with a large courtyard in the center. The building faces the main square, Place de l'Horloge., a very lively square. The apartment is on the 4th floor. Because the interior courtyard is a floor lower than the street in front, the apartment is only 3 flights above the front street entrance. Each flight has 16 steps. The building has several entrances and each has an elevator. There is a security code to enter the building.

Interior Description
(93m2/1,000 ft2)

The apartment is on the 4th floor. The building has an elevator. The entry foyer leads to a kitchen on the right, and then into a very large and bright living/dining room. On the left of the foyer is the hall leading to the bathrooms and three bedrooms. The apartment is beautifully furnished throughout, with Provencal colors and artwork that take advantage of the light-filled rooms. The furniture and beds are of high quality and comfort.

The kitchen is fully equipped and large enough for serious cooking. There are plenty of pots, pans, dishes, silverware, utensils, etc., including wine glasses and decanters and large trays to put on the ottoman in the living room for appetizers. There are spices and coffee in the pantry.

The living room has 3 large windows facing south. The floors are travertine marble, with an oriental carpet by the sofa. There is a sofa and 3 stuffed chairs, two ottomans, end tables, lamps and a huge antique glass front case, with lots of books, cards, games and maps. There is a cable TV and plenty of reading lamps. The dining table fits 6 with leaves in, 4 without, and there are tablecloths for both sizes and 6 padded chairs.

The first bedroom has a queen-size bed (160x200cm), and the second bedroom has a king-size bed (180x200cm). Both bedrooms share a large balcony with a table and chairs overlooking the interior courtyard, and a large closet in the hall. The third bedroom has a large closet and a queen-size (160 x 200cm) bed. This room also has a balcony overlooking the carousel and the Opera House. There is a large bathroom (no WC) in the hall with a full tub with a shower attachment, and a separate WC, also off the hall. In the second bathroom is a shower and sink (no WC). There are ceiling-mounted air conditioning units located in the living room and in each bedroom with compressors on both balconies. Each unit has a remote control. There are electric radiators in each room.

Customer Reviews

Overall:
Great.
Enjoyed Most:
Location and spaciousness.
Enjoyed Least:
We knew that it only had one toilet. I doubt that a second can be added but it would have been "nice" to have had a second.
Surrounding Area:
Wonderful section of the city, easy access to everything, including public transportation.
Tips or Restaurants:
Restaurant le 26. 26 Rue des 3 Faucons. Smallish, upscale appearance, outstanding service and food. Laurence (wife) welcomes you and takes great care of you, Joel (husband) is back in the kitchen prepping your wonderful meal. You may even spot their teenage son or middle school age daughter helping out on a busy night. Reservations are not required but I would recommend for Thurs-Sat nights. 04-90-86-51-53
Directions:
Just followed the impeccable directions.
Check In Out:
Yannick doesn't speak English but pointing works...Chantel speaks English fluently and will show you everything you need to know to fully utilize the apartment.

Overall:
We were very pleased, and impressed. Having stayed at other rentals, I must say that this apartment was the most welcoming and well-appointed. There were maps and books and ice cubes, the kitchen was very well-stocked with staples, and Chantal, the concierge, was charming, helpful, and spoke excellent English. The typed sheet with suggestions was most welcome.
Enjoyed Most:
The location. Though the square itself was noisy at night, the windows effectively closed out most of the noise, and during the day, it was grand to be so close to the heart of the city. The elevator. My Mom is frail, and needed a wheelchair for any significant distance. The apartment was perfect for her, and the shower stall was accessible, with just a small lip. The chairs were comfortable and not too deep, and the constant excitement out the living room windows amused her when she was too tired to go out.
Enjoyed Least:
A problem with sewer gas following a heavy rain.
Surrounding Area:
The availability of both tourist attractions and real-life, all within easy walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
1. There's a DVD player, so if you have kids, it would be a good idea to bring their favorites, as the TV is all in French. 2. The Palais des Papes is full of stairs, and strollers/wheelchairs are not permitted. Best to have a baby sling if you're taking a baby or toddler. 3. Use the phone books provided to find the addresses of things you might want like Chocolates Puyricard OMG 4. Restaurant AOC disguised as a wine merchant was charming and enough off the beaten track that we felt less tourist-y. 5 DO go to Les Halles. It's a veritable paradise for foodies. Walking distance - take the wheeled grocery cart in the kitchen, you'll need it!

Overall:
Excellent experience - you will not find a more convenient location in Avignon.
Enjoyed Most:
The location directly in the city center - 2 minute walk to the Papal Palace and no more that a 10 minute walk, tops, to all major restaurants.
Enjoyed Least:
Homeless people sleeping outside the entrance to the building.
Surrounding Area:
Everything - Provence is beautiful.
Nearby Events or Locales:
You are directly in the center of Avignon - it is right outside your doorway.
Tips or Restaurants:
Many fantastic restaurants - just get a few streets away from the tourist trap ones on the Place de l'Horloge Tripadvisor is a great source of recommendations. I would also higly recommend Avignon Wine Tours for a very fun and informative all day wine tour into the countryside.
