About The Experience

If you're going to rent a villa in Tuscany, this lovely country house is a great selection. You and your group won't be able to stop yourselves from spending most of your time out on the terraces, taking in the wonderful countryside views from this Tuscany accommodation. Of course, you could also do the same thing from the pool, surrounded by grassy lawn and patio furniture. When you do drag yourselves away from this Tuscany vacation rental, you'll love driving in to Arezzo to enjoy the local culture.

Location Description

This lovely villa located near Arezzo is closest to the village of Subbiano, a characteristic Tuscan town on the left bank of the Arno. Here you will find a Monday morning market, and if you're traveling in September you may be in time to join with the locals in their celebration of the grape festival, with product tasting and other traditional activities. The Museo dell Casa Contadina (farmhouse museum) is worth a visit, and you should also keep on the lookout for the remains of numerous water mills along the banks of the Arno. However, you'll probably spend most of your local hours exploring Arezzo, the charming town used as the backdrop for Roberto Benigni's "Life is Beautiful." Once one of the most important Etruscan cities, today Arezzo is beautiful for an array of architecture spanning centuries, from Etruscan ruins to the Roman amphitheatre and the Medici Fortress. The first weekend of each month brings a popular antique fair, while annually there is a festival called "Joust of the Saracens," where all of the citizens dress in medieval attire and knights representing each part of the city charge at a target representing a Saracen king. The area is also well-situated for day trips throughout Tuscany. Florence can be reached in 30 minutes by train from Arezzo; a train to Rome takes an hour and ten minutes.

Nearby Attractions: For wine lovers, the Terre di Arezzo wine trail, a more than 200 km long route crossing through the Province of Arezzo, is a fantastic way to become familiar with the wines of Tuscany. This trail passes through the growers of Chianti Colli Aretini DOCG, Cortona DOC, Colli dell‘Etruria Centrale DOC, Colli Etruria Centrale DOC and Vinsanto del Chianti DOC. Wine is not the only thing to be found along this trail! Near Cavriglia is the Fineschi Rose Garden with over 8,500 varieties of roses as well as the Cavriglia Park in the heart of the Chiantigiani mountains. Admire the Cennina Castle (Valdambra) and Gargonza Gastle (Monte S. Savino) along the route or any of the beautiful ancient churches and Etruscan and Roman remains.

Overall:
The villa far exceeded our expectations! It was even more beautiful than the pictures showed! And it was perfectly suited to our large multi-family group. There were many thoughtful touches that added to the overall feeling of luxury as well, such as the bathrobes in each room and extra pool towels, the fully stocked wine cupboard, the friendly cleaning staff, and even the yard staff checking when we might be out for the day so as not to disturb us with their noise. Our three weeks went by much too quickly and we never wanted to leave! Sometimes we almost resented all the other things we came to see that took us away from our wonderful villa - lol.. And we all fell completely in love with "Ned" the beautiful orange tabby cat who seems to adopt the visiting families - he was such a well behaved 'gato' - a real charmer...
Enjoyed Most:
We especially appreciated that the furniture was comfortable and child-friendly, and the many different seating areas assured that there was somewhere for everyone to be. There were places for us to all sit together and visit, places for the children to play, and there were also quiet areas for those who wanted a smaller setting to read or just enjoy the magnificent views. The dining tables were spacious enough for all 10 comfortably and we loved the al fresco dining options and used the outdoor pizza oven lots!! But our very favorite had to be the pool and hot tub area - it was so beautiful with lots of places to sit! We spent a lot of time there – (ice cold local brut, olive oil and bread and cheese in the afternoon watching the children playing quickly became a habit!) so the extra touches such as comfortable seating, tables and the small fridge poolside were much appreciated. We used the outdoor shower often and in the cool evenings we loved the lights around the pool as well as the heat lamp and lights over the hot tub. It's too bad the fountain wasn't working as that would have been the finishing touch! Rita and Roberto were so lovely - they shared some of their handmade olive oil with us as well as showing us some of the magnificent local mushrooms. They were very helpful and kind - they told us about some interesting local festivals and let us watch (and even help a little) with the grape harvest on the property - it was fascinating to see!
Enjoyed Least:
We did have a bit of trouble getting the heating of the pool organized to our liking due to some communication issues, but once it was worked out we were extremely happy and we all used it lots. Our only real complaint was the pillows - it seemed odd that with so much thought given to every other aspect of comfort, that there was only two pillows per bed and they were very flat and hard compared to what we are used to in Canada. We asked for, and received, extra pillows but they were so flat as to not make much difference.
Surrounding Area:
The villa is situated on a quiet mountainside with magnificent views into the valley towards Subbiano. We were surrounded on all sides by beautiful gardens, grape vines and olive groves. It was private and just perfect! And even though wild boar hunting season had just opened, it really was peaceful and restful. We were close enough to drive into any number of little towns easily, but did most of our major shopping in Arezzo.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Subbiano was not far but not walking distance. You would most definitely need a vehicle there.
Tips or Restaurants:
Our very best restaurant was at "home"! We loved being at the villa so much and the kitchen was so well equipped that our best and most favorite meals were all right at our doorstep! We especially enjoyed the outdoor oven and the kids particularly loved making their own pizzas to be cooked in the pizza oven. There was nothing finer than our families all together dining in the lovely al fresco dining room overlooking the valley in the evening and toasting the day with some delicious local vino... We brought our own bug spray, which we used lots of as we enjoyed being outdoors so much, but it wasn't a huge issue anyway.
