About The Experience

Charming, well-preserved cities; gorgeous countryside that inspired the best works of Van Gogh; sumptuous cuisine; and your own private Provence villa, just outside of St Remy. What could be closer to heaven? We can't think of anything, really. Inspire yourself with the same landscapes that prompted "Starry Nights," or wander ancient Roman remains in Glanum. Wherever you go near this villa for rent in Provence, you're sure to find the traditional France you've been dreaming of. This is one of the best-preserved areas in the country-- so if you can't find what you're looking for near this holiday villa in Provence, it may not exist!

Location Description

This villa rental is located less than a kilometer from the center of Saint Remy de Provence, a beautiful little city within walking distance. Saint Remy is perhaps most well known for the Saint Paul de Mausole hospital, where Vincent Van Gogh spent the last and most productive year of his life painting such masterpieces as "Starry Night," "Irises," "Wheat Field with Cypresses," and countless others. The town and the surrounding landscape inspired 150 paintings and sketches in all. Throughout its history Saint Remy has been a haven for artists, musicians, and writers (including Nostradamus!), and today it is alive with artists and traditions of its past, faithfully passed on from one generation to the next. Nearby is the fascinating city of Glanum, first a shrine to the Celtic god Glanis, later absorbed by the Romans, and reaching its peak in the Augustan age when many monuments were erected. Abandoned in 260 AD, it was left untouched until a 1921 excavation unearthed its ruins. Of course the central city of the region is Avignon, a city ringed by a medieval wall. Inside you will find narrow, winding streets and ancient buildings filled with shops and restaurants. Aside from being charming in itself, Avignon is both easy to reach by high-speed train and an excellent base for exploring the area: fifteen minutes in any direction takes you into protected countryside, covered in lavender and dotted with small towns rich in local culture. Try Gordes, on a hill overlooking a gorgeous valley; Cabrieres d'Avignon, featured in Peter Mayle's "A Year in Provence;" and Fontaine de Vaucluse, where you can see cold springs bubbling up out of the ground. Sample olives, truffles, lamb, and crème brulee-- all delicious specialties of the area. This is the true "Provence experience," one of the most authentic and genuinely regional areas in France.

Nearby Attractions: Saint-Remy-de-Provence (museums, Saint Paul de Mausole hospital, ruins of Glanum, artists), Avignon (train station, medieval wall, characteristic streets, restaurants, cafes), Gordes, Fontaine de Vaucluse, Cabrieres d'Avignon, Chateaurenard.
