- Location Description
-
This Provence villa is located in the famed "Golden Triangle" of Provence. The Golden Triangle consists of the area inside a triangle drawn from Avignon to Aix to Nimes, and it is considered to be the most beautiful part of Provence. This villa is situated at the foot of the medieval village of Les Baux-de-Provence in the Alpilles. The nearby village of Le Paradou has a unique museum, La Petite Provence du Paradou, which displays a miniaturized Provencal village and one of the largest collections of santons (small clay figurines). Saint-Remy-de-Provence is perhaps most well known for the Saint Paul de Mausole hospital, where Vincent Van Gogh spent the last and most productive year of his life painting such masterpieces as "Starry Night," "Irises," "Wheat Field with Cypresses," and countless others. The town and the surrounding landscape inspired 150 paintings and sketches in all. Throughout its history St.-Remy-en-Provence has been a haven for artists, musicians, and writers (including Nostradamus!), and today it is alive with artists and traditions of its past, faithfully passed on from one generation to the next. Worth visiting, Arles has a large two-tiered Amphitheatre. Built in the first century by the Romans, the Amphitheatre is capable of seating almost 25,000 spectators, and it originally provided entertainment in the form of chariot races and gladiatorial combat. Today it is used for bullfighting (during feria pascale), concerts and plays. On Saturdays there is a large market, one of the largest in Provence, where you can purchase textiles, pottery, art and local goods. Arles is also the gateway to the Camargue, one of the best natural sites in Europe with an exceptionally rich plant and animal life. The area is famous for their bulls and white horses. Other areas ideal for a day trip include Avignon, Nimes, and Aix-en-Provence.

Customer Reviews
Overall:
Very good. The caretaker, Francois, was very friendly and gave us a warm greeting for what proved to be an excellent week.
Enjoyed Most:
Good pool. Kitchen had two refrigerators and an induction stove top which heated up very quickly, and there was plenty of storage space. Two common rooms--plenty of room for people to spread out. Pretty yard and a nice view.
Enjoyed Least:
It was very hot when we were there and it was difficult to be comfortable at night. Too buggy to leave windows open--no screens. Beds in the loft were particularly warm. Editor's Note: The owner has confirmed that most of the windows have pull-down screens. There are also mulitple fans available. He apologized that the caretaker may have neglected to mention both to the client.
Surrounding Area:
Easy access to many sites: Les Baux, Arles, Glanum, the Camargue, Tarascon, and more. Supermarche in Arles reasonably close. Maussane, just a few miles away, very charming with excellent boulangeries patisseries and a good boucherie.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Nothing within walking distance. Both Fontvieille and Maussane are easy drives. Maussane was our favorite.
Tips or Restaurants:
Francois does not speak much English, so work on your French a bit. Some insect repellent would help.
Directions:
Just followed directions.
