- Exterior Description
-
This palazzo was constructed during the first half of the 14th century, at a time when Florence had begun to expand beyond the boundaries of the ancient Roman nucleus. It was commissioned by Messer Lapo, a member of the Aldobrandinis - a wealthy family who made their fortune in the spice business. At that time, via delle Belledonne was a main commercial artery leading out of the city - it connected the Mercato Vecchio (market square) and via Strozzi to the Porta del Trebbio, the city door that opens a path to the north. In the 19th century, the palazzo housed several painters' workshops, including that of the celebrated artist Ingres. The artists' need for light is probably the reason why most of the apartments have very large windows.

Q: How would you rate this property with regards to: Location, Bedrooms, Bathroom, Noise, Comfort, Amenities, Extra Costs, and would you stay at this property if you returned to Florence.
Thanks,
RMH
A: The property was in an excellent location ,right around the corner from all the best shops and close enough to all other areas. On the next street there were many small food stores which was very convenient. The main bedroom was very comfortable and had a little balcony which we used to dry our clothes. We did not use the other bedroom which was off the living room. The apartment was furnished very nicely with comfortable furniture and was very clean. The kitchen had every kind of utensil and pots and lovely dishes and glasses. The bathroom was spacious and had a very nice tunb and hand held shower. The people that managed the apartment were very helpful and filled our requests with things like a coffee maker(American) and hangers etc.It was not noisy and had a garden view of the palazzo next door. We were always happy to come back to the apartment as it really felt like home. The elevator was also very convenient. We would definetly stay at this location again.

Enjoyed Most:
The central and historic location.
Enjoyed Least:
The kitchen was very small. The shower, though it had excellent pressure, didn't release much water.
Surrounding Area:
All of Florence!
Tips or Restaurants:
Definitely go to the mercato centrale, it was one of the things we enjoyed the most during our stay. Also, B. Gallo on the piazza in front of Santa Maria delle Fiore serves the only martini we could find. The best restaurant we ate at was La Giostra by Santa Croce. Expensive, but well worth it, and the owner is quite a character.
Check In Out:
Laura and Maria were both wonderful!
Kristine, July
Enjoyed Most:
1. The proximity of the property to all places of interest. Everything was within
walking distance.
2. The trompe-l'oeil decorations on the walls and doors were fascinating.
3. The photographs of the property on your website don't do it justice.
4. Laura and Maria were extremely helpful at all times.
Enjoyed Least:
Once natural daylight had gone it was very dark in all rooms because of
insufficient artificial lighting.
Surrounding Area:
1. The proximity of small food shops.
2. The superb quality of the fresh food in the central market.
3. Identifying locations in Florence that were used in the film 'Hannibal'.
Tips or Restaurants:
1. Learn some Italian.
2. Buy your drinking water.
3. Best restaurants - Cantinetta Antinori, 3 minutes away. Expensive but worth it.
and Restaurant Aurora, high up in Fiesole - worth the 20 minute bus ride.
Directions:
We arrived by taxi from Florence airport and were met on the steps of the property by Laura, who gave us a very warm and friendly welcome.
Check In Out:
On check-out, Maria allowed us to leave all our luggage
in her office until it was time for us to go to the airport.
