About The Experience

Looking forward to tossing a coin into Rome’s famous fountain Trevi Fountain? While at this apartment you and your traveling companions can do so as often as you’d like as you will just be steps away from it. Located in a characteristic part of the city, this apartment is well suited for a family or friends. There is also another apartment in the same building, in case you have a larger group!

Location Description

The apartment is located in the Historical Center and is within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, Rome’s renowned monument in which coin-tossers are believed to be granted a return trip to the Eternal City. Also within walking distance are shops, restaurants, and markets. The Spanish Steps are a short distance away, so it will probably take you longer to climb them than to reach them! Due to the central location of this apartment, you’ll be able to easily visit the Pantheon, Campo dei Fiori, and even the Colosseum. The nearest metro stop is Barberini.

Nearby Attractions: A monument to Roman Baroque style, the Piazza di Spagna is one of the best people-watching spots in Rome. Around the piazza are several very well-known tea rooms including the famous Babington’s English Tea Room and the Café Greco. The house where English poets John Keats and Lord Byron lived and died, is on the right hand corner, as one begins to climb the 138 steps. This is an ideal neighborhood for shopping (or window shopping) at famous boutiques such as Prada, Valentino, and Gucci (Via dei Condotti).

Customer Reviews

Overall:
This is a very commodious apartment with excellent historic bones. The rooms are unusually large with many airy windows all around. The bathroom has recently been remodeled and has a separate tub and shower.
Enjoyed Most:
Good location if you like the Trevi area. Spacious. Clean.
Enjoyed Least:
One bath and face towel provided for each guest for a week. Also one set of sheets for the week. Some repairs and clean out of small storage areas would be pleasant. Basics provided.
Surrounding Area:
Good walking to everything. Although, not too close to Metro lines. Fortunately, the apartment is on a small cobblestone street away from the Fountain and the hoards.
Tips or Restaurants:
No WiFi in the apartment, but the key holder will arrange a small, mobile hotspot to leave on the apartment desk. It worked. So, you may bring your devices. Restaurants: Once you move 2 - 3 blocks away from the Fountain most small restaurants are quite good. For a special splurge, Aroma has big-window tables with a full on view of the Coliseum. The food is quite good also.
Directions:
We highly overpaid for a taxi from the Termini train station. The key holder will arrange an airport pick up that costs about the same as two train tickets and taxi ride.
Check In Out:
It is helpful to ask about operating the appliances.

Overall:
We enjoyed our stay overall.
Enjoyed Most:
The location was very convenient to the main areas in Rome and not too far from the Metro. The size of the bedrooms was very nice and the arrangement was comfortable. The couch was comfortable for sitting. Kitchen was workable and had enough pots and pans, dishes and cutlery.
Enjoyed Least:
I know that the mattresses in Italy are not like those in America, but the mattress was very hard and I had to use one of the comforters to pad it so I could sleep. The mattress on the sofa bed was very worn and there was no support, so my son kept falling through. He is tall, but not heavy. Fortunately, there was a roll-away bed and so he took the mattress off the bed and slept on the floor on the mattress. The chairs in the bedroom were also worn. Editor's Note: The sofa bed was replaced Dec 2011.
Surrounding Area:
Again, the location was convenient. The street was for the most part quiet. There was a grocery store about 1 block away and a cappuccino bar just around the corner.
Tips or Restaurants:
We had a very nice dinner at a restaurant called Abruze. It was just around the corner from the Church of St. Philip and St. James. It was about 4 blocks from the apartment.

Overall:
Our experience at Colonna 1 was good. The apartment is quite large with a decent kitchen. The bedrooms and bathroom are huge. The laundry facility was very good. It is a great apartment, in a good location, but it just needs a little TLC.
Enjoyed Most:
I loved the big rooms. We had plenty of room to spread out and relax after walking in Rome all day. It has huge windows which let in a great breeze, and they also supplied nice big fans in the bedrooms. I really enjoyed hearing the sounds of the restaurant on the street below and the smells. It is located about 2 blocks from the Trevi Fountain, and is about a 15 minute walk to Piazza Navona. Everything is pretty easy to reach from here, either by walking or catching the metro at the nearby Barberini station.
Enjoyed Least:
Some of the furniture was in need of repair; the sofa was coming apart. And, a sad fact of timing is that there was construction on the next building and it was quite noisy. Of course, this was just unfortunate timing; any other time, it would not be an issue. The corkscrew was broken....sad to have wine and not be able to get it open!
Surrounding Area:
The area around the apartment was quite lively. There were two restaurants right on the street. Just around the corner you could buy fresh fruit and veggies all day until quite late at night. There were also several gelato shops, wine, cheese, a great restaurant right around the corner, and a fabulous jewelry shop where the owner made beautiful, unique pieces. Of course there is the Trevi Fountain, and easy access to just about anywhere you want to visit. I really enjoyed the sounds of the restaurant at night, and the church bells that rang on the quarter hour.
Tips or Restaurants:
I would totally recommend Nanna's Vini e Cucina. It is just around the corner on Via Della Panetteria and the food is delicious. The cuisine is more southern Naples than Roman and is just wonderful. The staff is very friendly and add to the experience. Another fun place to eat is the Spaghetteria Archetto. It is on Via Archetto. They have over 100 spaghetti dishes on the menu. It is fun just to read through all the choices! One more place to check out is a wonderful jewelry shop, Benedetta Argento Etnico, on the Via della Panetteria, right across the street from Nanna's. Here you will not find any touristy junk. There are many beautiful pieces, at reasonable prices. Many pieces are hand made by the owner, who is a delightful woman. Stop in, you won't be disappointed!
