This lovely villa near Cortona, perfect for a family or two couples, offers an idyllic country setting with the incredible convenience of a restaurant right next door! Not only that, but this Cortona villa rental is just a couple of kilometers from the city itself, where you can enjoy the charm of living "Under the Tuscan Sun." Shop, sample fantastic Italian food, or just enjoy the atmosphere. When you've had your fill, hop in the car and go wine tasting, get lost in the gorgeous countryside, or explore one of the other Tuscan towns nearby. In the evening, you can return to this Tuscan rental villa and relax by the pool.

This villa is located 625 meters above sea level in the countryside area of Castel Girardi, on a slope between Sant'Egidio and Cortona.. Built high on a hill, Cortona was made famous by Under the Tuscan Sun and it is absolutely beautiful viewed from below... and once you get to the top, there are simply marvelous vistas over the entire valley. A couple of main streets feed into a charming piazza, and at the edge of the historic center there is a lovely public garden with fantastic views. Cortona is, however, a town for walkers. Streets run either uphill or down, and there are plenty of historic sights dotting the hillside just begging to be explored on foot. A train station (Terontola Cortona) about 3 km away makes taking day trips to other major cities simple and convenient.

This lovely country villa is located outside of Cortona, set into a hillside with a fabulous panoramic view over the Val di Chiana countryside, framed by the mountains of Siena. It has a covered patio with a dining table for outdoor meals and a stone path leads to the well-landscaped private swimming pool (16m x 8m) open from May to September, which also enjoys the same marvelous views. The garden is also equipped with sun lounges, a shade umbrella, and a barbecue. A local road runs below the property, and on the other side of the property is the only nearby building-- a convenient restaurant.

Historically, this villa consisted of a lower floor reserved for animals, while the upper floor was inhabited by the farmer's family. The entire villa has been beautifully restored with immaculate attention to detail, from the bathroom tiles to the kitchen sink.

Ground Floor: This apartment, which occupies the ground floor of a two-story villa, has a living area with a sofa-bed (suitable for one child), two chairs, a fireplace, stereo, and satellite TV. A large open arch leads into the kitchen, which is well-equipped with an oven, cook-top, microwave, dishwasher, toaster, American coffee maker, and Italian coffee maker. At one end of the kitchen there is a dining table for 8, one side of which is a bench seat along the wall. This apartment also has two bedrooms: the first has two twin-beds (88 cm) which can be combined to form a queen-size bed (175 cm) while the second has a queen-size bed (160 cm). They share a bathroom with a sink, toilet, and shower.
First Floor: The owners occupy the first floor of the villa.

Overall:
I was overwhelmed by how perfect everything was. This vacation surpassed my expectations. I fell in love with the countryside, and the owners...with whom I have already communicated since returning. They are now part of my life...mia familia italiana.
Enjoyed Most:
The inside was very spacious,and was extremely comfortable. I loved the way the windows opened out..and there were screens in them. No mosquitoes! The property was beautiful with a pool, flowers all around, and a lovely garden.
Enjoyed Least:
I truly have nothing negative to say. Usually when I go overseas the water pressure is terrible, and the hot water runs out. Never happened here.
Surrounding Area:
Where to begin. It was breathtaking to be up in the mountains. I really didn't know that places like this existed. As you can tell, I fell in love with this area.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest town is Camucia, but nothing is walking distance. We did take walks, but the roads are very curvy, and there are no sidewalks. You do need a car at this property.
Tips or Restaurants:
This place was completely equipped: umbrellas, flashlights, CD and DVD player, candles...etc. When we arrived we were greeted with hugs...a huge platter of cheese, meats, and bread, a homemade pie, bowl of fruit, bottles of water,fresh orange juice. A very nice greeting! Two great restaurants right on the road, 34 Umbro Cortonese, which travels up the mountain and takes you to the property.

Everything was smooth and easy.

Overall:
We had a great time. Ivan and his parents were like long lost family. Upon meeting them, we almost felt like part of their family.
Enjoyed Most:
The location. Even though outside of town, the property is very quaint and gave us a chance of exploring the countryside.
Enjoyed Least:
DVD player does not play US DVDs.
Surrounding Area:
The hilly countryside, plus the quaint Italian restaurant across the highway.
Nearby Events or Locales:
For most, except the very ambitious, Cortona is not within walking distance. Cortona is approximately 3 miles or more from the property.
Tips or Restaurants:
You really can't go wrong with any restaurant in or about Cortona and the Italian restaurant across the road.
Directions:
Did not use a GPS.

Check in and check out was smooth.

Overall:
Outstanding. We could not have been more pleased with the property, location, and landlord. The property was authentically restored and enhanced the experience of being in Tuscany. It provided all the amenities necessary for comfortable living. Cortona is a treat and the location offers the advantage of many side trips being within easy driving distance. The restaurant immediately across the road was both good and convenient when we did not feel like cooking or venturing out of the area.
Enjoyed Most:
As nice as the property was, the quarters, the views, the flowers and vegetation, what makes this a "don't miss" is the family that owns the villa and lives above the rental unit. They are friendly, gracious, and authentic. Meeting them was to get to know Tuscany up close and personal.
Enjoyed Least:
The only negative, a very mild negative, was the small shower. I am 6'8" which made the shower a bit of an adventure. However, it was clean and functional. If it worked for me it should work for almost everyone.
Surrounding Area:
We could have spent the whole week in Cortona. Quaint shops, fascinating history, and great restaurants.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Cortona is not within walking distance, but it is a very short drive.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring a hearty appetite and a spirit of adventure. The local roads are a bit challenging, but with a GPS, Tuscany and beyond is yours to explore.
Directions:
As good as the directions are, we recommend a GPS. Roads, especially local roads, are not that well marked.
Check In Out:
It was perfect. We were greeted with immediate warmth and hospitality. The departure included hugs all around.
