Birthplace of Galileo Galilei, Pisa is best known for its Campo dei Miracoli, location of the renowned leaning tower and a collection of elegant buildings. Livorno, on the other hand, is a hopping port down distinguished primarily by its Venetian-style canals and knockout seafood; it's also Tuscany's second largest city. Neither city warrants much more than a day trip and the beaches south of Livorno---like Castiglioncello, Vada, and Marina di Cecina---aren't particularly beautiful and draw massive crowds in high season. So why stay in the environs of Pisa or Livorno? Accessibility! Florence, Lucca, the beaches of the Maremma, and the Ligurian coast are all within easy reach. South of Lucca and west of Florence, the area of "North Pisa" is a good location for daytrips both into western Tuscany and to the beaches of Versilia. While this area also puts you within convenient reach of Florence (by car or train), great destinations such as Lucca, Montecatini Terme, Pistoia, and Prato are less of a stretch from our private villas in Pisa, and certainly less crowded in high season. If you're trying to beat the heat, the popular Tuscan seaside resorts of Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio are fun and family-friendly. While most beaches are private, admission buys you a couple of comfortable chairs and an umbrella, and often access to showers and dressing rooms. View our rental villas in North Pisa. West of Siena and east of Livorno, the area of "South Pisa" offers good access to Florence and the countryside around Volerra. Although industrial Livorno offers little of interest (besides great seafood!), the beautiful southern coastal zone of the Maremma is a worthwhile trip. If sun and sand are appealing, the beaches of Cecina are also a convenient daytrip from many of our private villa rentals in the region. Heading inland from the Pisan countryside, the well-preserved Tuscan hill towns of Volterra, San Gimignano, and Colle Val D'Elsa are three of our favorite destinations.
