The province of Almeria includes desertous inland areas and some of Andalucia's few remaining unspoiled beaches. This is an ideal area to explore in the early spring, as temperatures climb well into the 100s come late spring and summer. The city of Almeria boasts an extraordinary Moorish Alcazaba, one of the region's finest. You'll find the best beaches in the province to the east of the city, such as El Cabo de Gata; the western beaches are all very developed, much like the rest of the Costa del Sol.

A major port town, the historic center of Cadiz has retained much of its 18th century character. There are large squares and labyrinthine alleys. It’s a fun place to wander. The best beaches lie across the bay, near Rota and Chipiona. Don’t bother in July or August, though; they’re mobbed. This is sherry territory. Sample the local specialty in Puerto de Santa Maria, which can be easily accessed by ship from Cadiz.

Inland from the Costa del Sol and northeast of Sevilla, Cordoba offers a good selection of museums and historic buildings. In fact, its Plaza de los Capuchinos ranks among the region's most charming. Other must-see sights located in the city's old Jewish quarter include the Alcazar del los Reyes Cristianos, a fortified palace, and the Mezquita, a 12th century mosque. South of Cordoba lies Montilla, an excellent destination for wine lovers. Montilla is known for its white fino. Aguilar, Baena, Priego de Cordoba, and Zuheros are also fun additions to a day trip itinerary if you're staying around Cordoba.

A fabulous Spanish city, Granada should rate highly on one’s itinerary. The city’s Alhambra, the palace-fortress of the Nasrid Sultans, is an incredible example of Moorish architecture. The fortress is divided into three groups of structures: the Alcazaba, the Casa Real, and the Generalife. A single ticket will get you into all three. South of Granada lie the Sierra Nevada mountains. They offer great hiking opportunities, including a trail that traverses all the peaks called Ruta Integral de los Tres Mil. It takes about 4-6 days. Heading inland towards Almeria is also rewarding; you can stop at Guadix, a Moorish town with fascinating caves. Almeria’s best beaches are on the East Coast; try El Cabo de Gata.
